Bollywood's Obsession with Biopics: Hits, Misses, and the Future

Muneeza Anwer

Bollywood and biopics- this is a love story that can rival anything. Here's a look at the Hindi cinema industry's journey over the last decade splashing head-first into real-life stories-from inspirational tales like Dangal and Mary Kom, to overtly controversial ones like Sanju and The Dirty Picture. What's driving this obsession? Are these biopics doing justice to the lives they depict? Let's unwrap this cinematic craze!

Why Are Biopics So Popular?

Imagine this: a rags-to-riches journey, a sports underdog who breaks world records, or a rebel challenging societal norms. Who would not want to watch that? Bollywood has discovered that true stories have a universal appeal-they are relatable, inspiring, and crammed with drama.

Then, of course, there is the desi love for heroes. Be it MS Dhoni hitting sixes or Rani Laxmibai leading a revolt, biopics give us larger-than-life characters with the bonus of being real people. It's like saying, "This isn't just filmi masala; it actually happened!

Then there's the money factor. Biopics are box-office gold. Dangal became one of the highest-grossing Indian films ever, with over ₹2000 crore worldwide. Why wouldn't filmmakers jump on the bandwagon?

The Hits: When Bollywood Got It Right

Bollywood has had its fair share of biopic triumphs. Here are a few gems:

1. Dangal (2016)

dangal

Aamir Khan as Mahavir Singh Phogat gave us goosebumps. The film didn’t just celebrate the achievements of Geeta and Babita Phogat; it also tackled themes of patriarchy and perseverance. Plus, who didn’t chant “Dhakad Dhakad” for weeks after?

2. Neerja (2016)

neerja

Sonam Kapoor delivered a career-best performance as Neerja Bhanot heroic flight attendant who had sacrificed her life to save her passengers from the clutches of the hijackers. And honestly, this one hit us right in the feels while celebrating courage and selflessness.

3. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013)

Farhan Akhtar turns into Milkha Singh, showing us the glorious victories of the Flying Sikh, right along with all his struggles. The film was inspiring, emotionally testing, and perfectly timed.

4. MS Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016)

Sushant Singh Rajput’s portrayal of MS Dhoni was nothing short of spectacular. The film didn’t just capture the rise of India’s cricketing icon but also delved into the struggles and sacrifices behind his success. That helicopter shot? Pure magic!

These movies didn’t just entertain; they stayed true to their subjects, bringing depth and dignity to their stories.

The Misses: When Bollywood Missed the Mark

Not every biopic has the Midas touch. Some stumble by prioritizing drama over facts, while others fail to connect with audiences.

1. Sanju (2018)

sanju

Ranbir Kapoor was excellent in Sanjay Dutt's role, but the movie was more of creating an image than narrating a truth. The glossing over of controversies made it feel like a missed opportunity for depth.

2. Shabaash Mithu (2022)

There is immeasurable potential in the story of Mithali Raj, India's cricketing legend, but the film couldn't deliver the emotional punch or excitement a sports biopic demands. Though Taapsee Pannu left one speechless by her performance, Shabaash Mithu could not succeed at the box office, proving good intentions alone never make good films.

3. PM Narendra Modi (2019)

This biopic felt rushed and overly flattering, sparking criticism for being more propaganda than storytelling. The lack of nuance and balanced perspective hurt its credibility.

Do Biopics Do Justice to Their Subjects?

Bollywood biopics often walk a fine line. Some (MS Dhoni, Dangal) take the route of sticking to their subjects; others (Sanju) take liberties with facts for cinematic flavor. The question is whether it's possible to strike a balance between entertainment and content.

Audiences today demand more. They can no longer settle for shallow productions; they require authenticity, complexity, and credibility in the storytelling process. A bit of creative license is alright, but when it crosses into fabrication, it’s a deal breaker.

The Future of Bollywood Biopics

With biopics here to stay, what can Bollywood do to keep the magic alive?

1. Tell Lesser-Known Stories:

Move beyond the household names and cover some unsung heroes scientists, social reformers, or ordinary people doing something extraordinary.

2. Break Stereotypes:

Female-led biopics often focus on sacrifice. It’s time to celebrate women as achievers, not just survivors.

3. Embrace OTT Platforms

Streaming services offer creative freedom, letting filmmakers explore stories without worrying about box office constraints.

4. Prioritize Fact-Checking:

Audiences are more intelligent and informed than ever, and filmmakers ought to respect that intelligence through well-researched cinema and truthful portrayals.

Why We Keep Coming Back

Biopics remind us of the extraordinary within the ordinary. Whether it's MS Dhoni smashing his way to glory or Neerja Bhanot for her ultimate sacrifice, these stories inspire us to dream big and never give up.

So, next time you see a Bollywood Biopic, ask yourself: Is it a reality? Are you entertained? And above all, is it inspiring?

Because who knows, your story might just make it into the next Bollywood blockbuster. All it requires is a wee bit of drama, a whole lot of heart, and maybe a hummable soundtrack.
